Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a tai chi wu shu tournament? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be part of the Beijing Olympic Games? Well, give yourself a few minutes to learn about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I was privileged to be selected as the coach and team manager of the Australian Team at the Special Wushu Tournament which was run concurrently with the Olympic Games in Beijing August 2008. The International Olympic Committee gave special permission for this Wushu (kung fu and tai chi) tournament to be conducted during the Olympic Games in order to promote the Chinese martial arts such as tai chi and kung fu on the international stage.

128 athletes from 48 counties and regions took part. These athletes were the top participants from last year?s World Wushu Tai Chi Kung Fu Championships. There was also ?wild card? entries allocated for some regions of the world that would not otherwise be represented. Australian Susie Parnham,received one of these wild cards to compete in Tai Chi Chuan (bare hands) and Tai Chi Jian (straight sword). During the Games in Beijing, I kept a diary, which I would like to share with you.

Tai Chi's Monday 18th August

I arrived at the grand new airport in Beijing to be met by IWUF volunteers at the arrival gate and escorted to the special Olympic Passport control area to be ?fast-tracked? through while everyone else had to stand in long queues. The Customs officer greeted us with a very nice smile, which was so different to the usual serious manner. Outside the Customs area we were greeted by an IWUF official and given our ID cards, which were to be our passport to so many events, areas and services for the whole duration of our stay. We were wondering where we would be staying and when we were told that we would be in the Olympic Village, we were over the moon.

Upon arrival at the Olympic Village (called the OLV by Olympians), we went through very high security provisions and was scanned in a similar fashion to airport security. At each entrance of the OLV there was a SWAT team with machine-guns and rifles and in full riot gear. Then we went through the main gate. Just being inside and seeing this enormous ?city within a city? was overwhelming. We finally found our proper allocated apartment. (We were first mistakenly taken to the official Australian Olympic Team?s accommodation. I had a strong and uncomfortable feeling that we really shouldn?t be there.) We were relieved to find our own rooms in a fourbedroom apartment with shared bathroom.

We had a rest and then went on reconnaissance to find important matters ? food! Luckily we were given a map of the OLV by the Australian Olympic team to find our way around. We were in awe at the size of the largest of the three dining halls. It was the length of an AFL football ground, with row after row of tables and chairs, and at the far end, the food buffet included all types of food you can possibly eat - from international cuisine, to Chinese and McDonalds. Food and drinks (and ice-cream) was available 24/7 and all free. We sat down to enjoy a nice lunch with an added delicacy ? Beijing Duck! We were told that the first week 3000 serves a day were consumed and the following week they had to increase the number to 6000 serves per day.

After lunch we explored some more. Other facilities included a laundry, and internet caf?, both free of charge. Another area allocated for athletes was the international zone for banking, mobile phone sales and recharging, and, of course, shopping (this was China after all).

Tai Chi's Tuesday 19th August

We attended a special meeting in the morning. At the meeting, we found out that the IOC was unhappy that the Wushu tournament participants were accommodated in the OLV. We were told not to display any wushu flags and keep a low profile in the OLV. In the afternoon I walked a circuit to find out where and how we could take the shuttle bus to training and competition. All transport was free to athletes including the normal trains and busses in the city. Only taxis had to be paid for.

The shuttle bus was battery-driven to keep within the ?Green Olympics? theme.

Tai Chi's Wednesday 20th August

A Team Officials meeting outlined the competition format. Then the ballot for the athlete?s order of performance on the floor was carried out. We had lunch, a rest, and late in the afternoon we took a bus to the Welcoming Dinner. This was a 13 course dinner including lobster, scallops, crispy-skin chicken and much and from the since-elected Vice-President of the IOC. Each country was presented with a Beijing 2008 Wushu Competition souvenir plate. Lots of photos were taken amongst old and new friends. These were the new difficult routines, the ones that included many new super-advanced techniques. In the evening there was more competition and we had our first medal presentation. The gold medal was won, of course, by China. Subsequently, every event that China competed in, they won. The only events won by other countries were ones with no Chinese entry. Eventually, China won 8 gold medals. The medals were identical to the ones presented to the Beijing Olympic athletes except that they had the IWUF and wushu symbols in the centre instead of the Olympic rings.

As we left the competition before lunch, the Chinese crowd noticed that we were wearing our Australian Team uniform and they all wanted to have their photos taken with us. We were there for about an hour having our photos taken. What a wonderful feeling, we were treated like Rock Stars! It showed how popular we are in China!

The night time session was dramatic. The Italian competitor in straight sword and spear missed out on first place by 0.05. Her mum, who was the coach of Italy, was furious. She stormed out of the sitting area and barged into the competing arena to protest. While the three medal winners were ready to receive their medals on the podium, she dragged her daughter away in tears. The officials went to talk to them for a long time, the other medal winners being left standing waiting for the presentation to commence. Eventually the Italian competitor returned to the podium to receive her silver medal. Had wushu been an Olympic Games sport, I am sure this would not have been allowed to happen.

The last day of the competition was the Sanshou finals. Once again there were two Chinese finalists and they won their final bouts. The Chinese Women?s 52 kilo competitor wasparticularly ?brutal? to her opponent. She was fierce!

The surprise came at the end of competition when all Team Managers were told that we were to be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games closing ceremony. Would you believe it? The closing ceremony? Inside the Birds Nest? We clapped and clapped. We were very very excited.

We arrived at 5 o?clock to catch the bus to go to the Closing Ceremony. All the buses were lining up to take us to the Birds Nest. We were told there were 63 buses! On the way, all the side roads were closed off along the route. On the bus, we were given tickets for the Stadium. When we noticed that all the tickets were marked with the same section and number, we started to wonder about the validity of the tickets. But they were genuine ? just another example of a unique Chinese system.

Our seats were very close to the edge of the arena ? a perfect viewing placement. On each seat there was a ?show bag? containing a fan, a mini-Olympic torch, a little prayer-drum, a colourful wristband, and a souvenir booklet. All the items were for use during the show.

By now I was starving because I hadn?t had any lunch. So I ventured to the back of the Stadium, to my astonishment, there were two trestle tables full of food and fridges full of drinks ? all free! The weather was very hot and humid. We were all stewing nicely inside the Stadium. There were preliminary entertainment before the commencement of the Closing Ceremony (this was not shown on TV). There were comedians, acrobats, tumblers, singing, and crowd involvement. And there were girls on the aisles who gave us a rehearsal of the things we had to do during the ceremony.

You?ve seen what a spectacular show it was on TV. Being there was another experience altogether! No words can really describe it. Just to be part of the Closing Ceremonywas the experience of a life-time.

After the Closing Ceremony, as usual in China, the whole place was empty within 5 minutes. After we arrived back at the OLV, all the athletes gathered in the dining room. This is where the action started. Everyone wanted to get McDonalds. Even with all that wonderful other food available! There was such a buzz in the air!

While I was queuing up, the word got around that the American basketball ?Dream Team? was in the queue at MacDonald?s and, luckily, I had my camera with me, and started taking photos of Kobe Bryan and other American basketballers who I could not identify. There was a big crowdaround the team while they were eating. It was on the border of hysteria. It was a late night to bed.

Tai Chi's Monday 25th August

In the morning we had breakfast in the giant hall again, but for the last time. We then went to the shopping area for a last minute grab at some shopping. At 12 o?clock it was time to leave the OLV. The South African Olympic team was on our bus to the airport. When we arrived at the airport there was a special area for the bus to park, and we then checked in to return home.

Some of the famous people I met at the Games were Grant Hackett, Kobe Bryant, Ronaldino the Brazilian soccer player, John Earl, Melissa Wu, John Stephenson, Natalie Cook, Hussein Bolt the fastest man on earth, and many more.

This was just an incredible experience, not only of tai chi and kung fu, but of an Olympic Games ? an opportunity that probably will not be repeated again in a lifetime. I?ve learnt many valuable things by just being part of the Beijing wushu games. How can high density!

Read the Golden Lion Tai Chi website and noticed that the list of recommended books and DVDs, including books. I looked familiar we bought several years ago Amazon books that I to identify the Tai Chi's book on the second floor so I thought this book. Guess what was my bookshelf?

So I read it started-read correctly when I bought it, but most of what you think and it like busy.

I, too, and authors including, and turn the pages of my book large Sifu Pier Tsui-didn't notice before was only 75 pages I thought was a Golden Lion Academy book written by Po I saw your photos. How thick you can! I read it cover, and loved it!

I now, slowly reloads and trying to figure out all understand what is really inspiring.

One week before we we had a prefectural (State) Tai Chi Festival. Is usually the team competition this year Festival and competition change individually.

Reminded me that I read my book so that I do not even the total of the individual, but I this year wait to my stomach churning and heart race stood. I also have about teacher teaching and-reminded to react if you think negative thoughts your body.

Think positive thoughts so much, and I tried regulate your breathing. And it worked! I like before but did not conflict I wasn't nervous or I shake my hands and knees, and usually to get on the floor I also wreck is I that hopeless.

Tai Chi Chuan, Baguazhang & Hsing-I

I find that I tend to get asked a lot questions on 3 main internal art of Tai Chi Chuan, Baguazhang & Hsing-I. These issues include but are not limited to:

How are they different? How are they the same? is one of the internal arts better than others? which one of them is better to fight? as for the internal arts best regards internal energy to fight? are all 3 main internal art equally healthy you? which one should I study? which one should I study first if I want to or are planning to study for more than one? What are actually those art?can they work together?

I will try to answer some questions in my next few posts and shed some light on these arts at the same time. This will of course be a comparison and contrast of Hsing-I, baguazhang and Tai Chi Chuan but I hope to do a little more than that with this series of posts on these 3 internal art.

All 3 of these arts is Chinese internal martial arts that use education of special body mechanics including internal and external adjustments and the training of the peace of mind and chi energy. All three art has very different methods to combat but sometimes they are similar and will use similar motions to each other. When you have been trained in one of them and then try it on one of the other differences in approach and methods are quite obvious, and only after you have studied more in depth aspects for quite a long time do begin they seem to be more as part of the larger image.

Hsing-I is an art that is known as very linear in strategy and generally applied when we move forward with a proposal on the wave like a sine wave. Tai Chi Chuan, Baguazhang & Hsing-I compare & contrast (part 2)

  One of the first things to know is that for the 3 internal arts, Hsing-I (phonetically pronounced as Shing-ee) is generally the easiest and quickest to learn.As a fighting art tends to be much more aggressive and unbridled directly in approach than the other two; The internal adjustment training in Hsing-I am still a beginner quite a bit of time to understand but spirited struggling due to the nature of art there tend to be better feedback on what you are doing with special punches and strikes. 

  Hsing-I is an art that is known as very linear in strategy and generally applied when we move forward with a proposal on the wave like a sine wave. The old master reaches out his hand and lightly taps the young man’s arm in a couple of different places and eases the temporary paralysis that set into the arm immediately after the strike. Quite surprised, the young man says, “How can this be? Your arm was held out softly but it felt like it had a crowbar in it and how did you fix my arm so fast?” The old master gently smiles and says, “steel wrapped in cotton. This is just one of the many secrets of real Tai Chi.”


In the Tai Chi classic writings there are statements about the proper body quality of Tai Chi practitioner’s being like steel wrapped in cotton. I have had the good fortune to study with several Tai Chi masters who are well versed in the steel wrapped in cotton method which is sometimes referred to as the “Golden Bell Method”. There are not very many Americans who have been exposed to this high level and secret training method of Tai Chi. To help those who desire to know the training methods as described in the Tai Chi Classics I have produced a video, “Internal Iron Body in 100 Days” to help practitioners who are interested to begin training in this highly internal method of Iron Body that leads to the steel wrapped in cotton method.


Steel Wrapped in Cotton is an extremely healthy form of Iron Body training. Iron Body training is designed to make the body very strong and able to withstand powerful strikes without receiving damage and without getting much or any pain. There are different kinds of Iron Body. Some kinds of iron body are quite external and training often involves striking the body and using impact as well as deadening the nerves to build the body up to take stronger and stronger strikes. Generally speaking striking methods of building iron body are not very healthy for you. Tai Chi Steel wrapped in cotton Iron Body Training is “internal” and VERY HEALTHY for you.

Steel wrapped in cotton is as much a health practice as it is a martial one. There is a lot of confusion about the difference between steel wrapped in cotton and external iron shirt techniques. In order to help avoid confusion please realize that Steel Wrapped in Cotton is very different from external iron shirt and the practice methods are completely different. One important distinction between the two methods is that external iron shirt methods can be hazardous to learn and unsafe to train while steel wrapped in cotton is generally safe to learn, train and practice. Steel wrapped in Cotton is healthy for you and continues to be healthy for you even into very advanced old age.


Another distinctive benefit to training steel wrapped in cotton is that after the basic training all you have to do to maintain steel wrapped in cotton is to continue to properly practice your Tai Chi with the correct internal alignments, breathing and energetics that are the same as required for other high level Tai Chi practices. This makes it so that you are training steel wrapped in cotton every time you practice your Tai Chi so that you are not having to set aside separate training time for your iron body practice. This is a real benefit in our modern world of limited time and allows you to get more bang for your buck from your training time.


Steel wrapped in cotton training helps to build the internal body mechanics and energy that Tai Chi is so famous for and after steel wrapped in cotton is sufficiently trained you can use this energy to help perform other high level Tai Chi health and fighting skills such as Fa Jing (touching an opponent and sending them flying or touching them and causing the force to go inside of them dropping them where they stand), Peng, rooting, immovable body, etc..

This internal quality is a key component of real Tai Chi and it is unmistakable once you have felt it. In the early 1980’s I trained external iron shirt along with my external Kung Fu training and the first time I felt steel wrapped in cotton it did not make sense to me because I did not understand how my instructor could be so soft and so powerful at the same time. With his steel wrapped in cotton he could penetrate my iron shirt and with my training at that time I could not get past even the first layer of his steel wrapped in cotton. This was part of my introduction into the real higher level internal arts that now form the heart and soul of all of my personal training for the last 25 years.

Offensive Applications
When you strike with Steel Wrapped in Cotton you can hit the opponent / attacker anywhere and it will hurt them badly. To the recipient it is like being hit with a heavy crowbar wrapped in a thin layer of cotton. I have also found it to be much like an iron bar that is covered with a thin sheath of rubber covering the steel. Imagine having a heavy black ridged crowbar in your hand and swinging it in a manner so that the weight of it hits the top of an opponents head, collar bone, neck, nose, jaw, or even just on their arm. The strike will normally break, destroy or at least temporarily paralyze whatever it hits. As a result the fight is usually over after just one hit.


The steel wrapped in cotton hit is one basic beginner type of Tai Chi Death Touch. It is referred to as a Touch because of how much damage can be done with so little effort on the part of the practitioner. The practitioner feels very relaxed, calm and soft and to the Tai Chi man it only feels like he is performing a simple strike or touch. The focus of my next article will be on the Tai Chi Death Touch.


In Tai Chi the body mechanics, alignments and ability to use the mind to form and direct your body energy are all part of the study of Tai Chi and eventually many of the advanced practices are designed to work in harmony with each other. Striking with Steel Wrapped in Cotton is simply a matter of training your hands and arms or whatever body part you wish to strike with
(elbows, shoulder, hips, kicks etc) to exhibit the steel wrapped in cotton quality. To that end I have a specific video for iron palm, hand and forearm that are based on the proper training of steel wrapped in cotton for that purpose. I thank my many teachers and my creator for the training I have received in these internal Tai Chi methods as I have gained a great amount of personal health benefits from them and the internal Tai Chi steel wrapped in cotton training. I am very honored to be exposing these heretofore secret training methods to the Tai Chi community in the West as I personally believe that in this day and time folks are ready for the real internal teachings that form the basis of high level Tai Chi.
